Jack & Jill

"Jack & Jill,” a jazz musical, opened at the River West Theater in Greenwich, Village in April, 1984 starring Tony-nominee Ernestine Jackson as Jill and Lara Teeter as Jack. It is the story of a black and white couple brought together by a mutual love of jazz, whose love affair is bitterly opposed by parents on both sides. Book and lyrics of the show are by Bob Larimer and music was composed by Hal Schaefer. Mr. Schaefer is an accomplished jazz pianist, conductor and arranger who also worked in Hollywood as vocal coach, where his students included Marilyn Monroe. Reviewing the show, The New Yorker Magazine said, “The performance couldn’t be better or more charming.”

Three songs from the shows were subsequently recorded by the jazz singer, Jeannie Bryson and the Jay Hoggard Quartet. (See below.)
